In conversation with Sue Barnes

“Making the choice to become an artist after completing my teaching degree was an easy one. Initially specialising in batik, I set up business. Since then most of my endeavours have been in the artistic realm, from designing point of sale displays to setting up a landscape design business, for which I had to learn many plant names and how to operate heavy garden machinery!

Bridport became like a magnet over successive family holidays (particularly during Open Studios) and became our home almost 4 years ago. The arty vibe is still very appealing and I have found my ‘niche’ where I can extend my skills in a more selfish direction, working on my own creations. I still teach here, which is immensely enjoyable and satisfying, but I also have the time and space to create for myself.

I love to work with the richest colours and on a fairly large scale – and a particular pleasure is working in papier mache.

Anything bold and brave is attractive to me and I try to show the same confidence and joie de vivre in my work.”
