Sculpture, Letter carving & Drawings

BOS Venue 4

Geraldine Claire Guest is a Sculptor, Letter Carver and Artist drawing in Pastel.  BA. MA RCA/ V&A.

I trained in Stone carving with John Skelton (Eric Gills nephew) in Street, Sussex, Glynis Owen Jones in Highgate, London. Tom Perkins and John Skelton taught me Letter Carving and I attended courses with the Lettering Arts Trust, Snape Maltings,Suffolk.

I am self taught in drawing. I attended Art College doing Foundation and then a BA in Worthing, latterly, completing an MA at the RCA /V&A in History of Design and Culture, where Professor Chris Frayling was head of department, and Charles Saumarez Smith and Gillian Naylor CBE my course tutors. My dissertation was on Wax Anatomical figures. I also have a Diploma in Ceramic Conservation from West Dean College, Chichester, Sussex.

When Stone Carving I work from my intuition and dreams. Feelings are paramount. I watch carefully what my subconscious throws up once I’ve had my first idea for a new piece of work. Totems, symbols, votive images appear from nowhere capturing my attention.

It can take months of note making, sketching, making maquettes and jotting down or reading poetry, before I begin. Then I first let the stone speak to me, drawing on it with charcoal, encircling it like an animal snaring its prey. Thinking at this point is death to the imagination and process.

It’s visceral, rhythmic like blood pulsing through the arteries. I love the sound as my chisel hits the stone. When I teach a group to carve it’s orchestral, like cicadas starting up on a hot Mediterranean morning.

I come from a long line of direct carvers (no power tools), descending conceptually from Brancusi, through Hepworth, Moore, Underwood, Gaudier Brezska etc. My carving hero is Frank Dobson.

My work is figurative, anthropomorphic, and colour is important to me. Bold strokes of Charcoal and Pastel. I am strongly influenced by the German expressionists, and many early to mid C20 painters, including Bomberg, Auerbach, Keith Vaughan, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and  Roger Fry, as for five years I was involved in the restoration of Charleston Farm House, Firle, Sussex, latterly becoming Curator until 1999.

I look forward to participating in this my first BOS, since moving from Sussex, Spain and Suffolk and welcoming you to my studio. This year especially, in support of those who lost everything in the fire at St Michael’s in July. Refreshments.
