Gerry Dudgeon 1000

Portrait of Gerry Dudgeon

What did you hope to convey by your choice of artwork for the BOS guide?

“A free and bold response to the landscape of West Dorset.”

How would you describe the process by which your artwork takes shape?

“After making pen & ink sketchbook drawings in the landscape, I start each painting in the studio with loosely applied abstract marks while the canvas is on the floor, with no fixed image in mind. Then when it’s dry, I allow these marks and colours to suggest the way forward, gradually forming a composition which has structure and depth, based on the shapes and rhythms of the surrounding landscape.”

Why do you think it is important for Artists to participate in Open Studio events?

“It’s useful to get feedback from visitors, and provides an insight into how artists work. It’s also a good way to sell one’s work, to build up the mailing list and occasionally to get noticed by gallery owners.”
